Most paver installations require a base layer of material that is spread out and compacted before the pavers are laid. Most installations use screenings or paver sand. Among the different materials you can use, the most popular is the 1/4″ minus concrete screenings which is fine enough for the pavers to come out level and compact-able enough so that it creates a stable base layer. Another sand used is DOT paver sand which is a very fine sand often used for travertine and marble installations.
